Produce Safety in Minutes
FOOD SAFETY EDUCATION FOR BEGINNING
AND UNDERSERVED FARMERS
FAMU x UF Collaborative Project
Project Objectives
- Develop Produce Safety in Minutes, a series of remote learning produce safety videos to address learning gaps for beginning and underserved farmers
- Develop “live” instructor-led workshop webinars, Everyday Produce Safety Webinars, and Case Studies in Produce Safety discussions to deliver applications of food safety education to an expanded audience across Florida and the US
- Develop evaluation tools to assess short- and medium-term learning and impact
Farmer Advisory Board
A farmer educator advisory council composed of small and underserved produce farmers in FAMU's outreach region were recruited to identify food safety content to be addressed in the project.
Student and Faculty Collaboration
Masters students from FAMU College of Agriculture and Food Science are collaborating with UF faculty to create digital resources for minority and beginner farmers. Through our collaborative approach, we have been able to foster a more comprehensive understanding of produce safety by bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, leading to a richer learning experience and stronger solutions to complex food safety issues. Through engagement, translation of materials into Haitian Creole, and content feedback, FAMU students aid in making our extension projects accessible and relevant to all growers. Our students also participate in our instructor-led webinar series: Everyday Produce Safety. In this series, experts in the field of food safety present the latest research and methods for food safety according to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule.
